New AR appearing - 23rd March 2022

Just spotted a lovely (not lively!) big sunspot appearing on the limb this morning, following behind a patch of faculae with some small spots embedded in it. It’s not AR12974 but is fairly nearby. Worth a look, it’s currently showing the Wilson effect quite nicely, and there look to be a few smaller pores following on behind.

Seeing is quite good here today. This was through the 76mm, might pop the 100 out in a bit.

Excellent Stu thank you.  I've just downloaded the app, never seen it before.  Delighted to have it as soaceweather.com is always a few hours out.  Good to know what I'm missing 😄.

You must be stuck under that tiny bit of cloud while the rest of us bask in the sunshine! Should clear for you soon by the looks of it.

Just been for another quick look, and there is a very thin line just on the limb slightly above the main spot. I reckon it’s another large spot following on behind. Interesting to see it appear as the sun rotates.

This is a smartphone pic from earlier, with a closer crop.DDB0B8EA-5A64-4656-9E3D-B62DB25589D0.thumb.jpeg.dc5e18a3b31516ffe651eef8568e6126.jpeg

This is where I see the next spot showing up, as a thin dark line which looks like a sizeable spot seen almost edge on. It’s amazing to see the rotation bringing this feature into play just in a few hours since this morning.

How are you getting those pictures via mobile ? Using just a phone holder ?

These were actually just taken handheld at one eyepiece of my binoviewer! Not ideal, but it works!

I use an app called ProCam 8 to capture and then process the raw image using PS Express, all on the phone. I’ve taken better images, this one was quite tough for some reason. Still quite small I guess.

Just about caught that new spot here. Much more obvious in the scope, I can even see the umbra and penumbra I think, as variations in darkness of the line.

Thanks Paul. That is similar to the visual detail I was getting today, loads of detail in there and the spots embedded in the faculae looked great.

I think this picture must have been taken earlier today before the other spot appeared around the limb. I agree with SDO, there is another big spot coming :)

Thanks Stu.  Took this single frame this morning between 7.30 and 8.15, using the 102ED.

Nice shot Paul, although the spot is a bit smaller than I was expecting. It’s an interesting looking group though, should be fun to watch as it progresses.
