Balancing an ED 71 telescope

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have recently bought an ED71 scope for imaging. The scope comes with a very short dovetail and when I put the camera on it (Canon 1000D) it is not possible to get it to balance even with the mount right at the end of the dovetail closest to the focuser.

I have a longer dovetail that could extend past the focuser to try out but that would prevent the camera from mounting correctly.

Any ideas of how to do this in a better way?

Thanks in advance!

Some people put weights at the end of the dovetail to help balance it out.

I've my 70mm refractor mounted with the focuser upside down. It means the scope can be mounted further forward on the dovetail. I bought a long vixen dovetail and counterweight on a clamp to counterbalance at the objective end. The smaller the scope the more of an issue with balance. The glass isn't big enough!
