The right back focus makes all the difference...

A hoped-for, but unexpectedly actual, EEVA session last night, sandwiched between rain showers, an hour's power outage, and an ethernet failure which brought it to an end.

Nothing exotic here, I was trying to confirm that I had, AT LAST, the right spacing for my Atik 460EX and my C9.25 Hyperstar (F2.3) giving a 1.32° FOV, and 1.7" per pixel. No filters.

I think I have it, because the stars seem reasonable, and the photon gathering seems to be working:

  • M27, Dumbbell – 10 x 60s
  • C33, East Veil – 15 x 20s
  • C34, Witch's Broom – 15 x 20s
  • C19, Cocoon – 5 x 60s
  • IC 1396A, Elephant's trunk – 9 x 60s

Sadly, I wasn't able to use Jocular to stack in real-time, but I ran them all through subsequently.  Many thanks to @Martin Meredith for the help with that.  Hopefully next time I will be fully online with it!

Tony

Hi Tony, Great to know you have the spacing sorted and to show the power of the EEVA technique. Noting you are using the hyperstar I would be interested to see what results are possible in a shorter total exposure time. Looking forward to your next posts.

I would point that huge FOV at NGC 1268 in Perseus

Hot off the press, here's my first quick look.  It's not the best direction (the city of Oxford is to the east.)  For that reason, this is a crop, essentially full height, but reduced width, to get rid of edge artefacts which I assume to be  LP.

So this is a single 20 second frame (not much point in doing less, since it's only USB2 and downloads take over 5 seconds) plus an annotated stack of 10 minutes worth...

I believe I need a better set of maps (I do have them, but a have a problem with them,,, another topic, Martin.)

Thanks for the suggestion!

Tony

Wonderful to see such a wide fov with all those galaxies. Amazed at what just 20 seconds picks up. I get so use to a narrow fov, so seeing this shot gives the context of this galaxy group.

Thanks Tony (and to Martin for suggesting the group).

Thanks for pointing at the Perseus Cluster. The single sub is very impressive for 20s. The wide field really helps put the size of this cluster into perspective. If I were to invest in a wide(r) field setup it would be for these types of objects.

I'd be intererested to know what problem you're having with the charts because a few people have had issues with permissions/hyperlinks and it would be good to perhaps have a separate thread on sharing experiences in order to resolve any issues.

Hyperlink permissions issue, indeed. Where best do you think for the thread?

The faintest galaxy I have checked is mag 16.6 but there looks like other fuzz spots that are fainter.

I see (with definite elongation) P212731 @mag 17.2 (centred):

Hi, nothing like a little who can see the faintest galaxy competition!!!!

Fairly certain I can see PGC 2035682 at mag 17.9 and PGC 2035566 at mag 18.1 - mag 18 using a 9.25" scope and in 10 minutes - impressive.

Also checked the single 20 second shot of NGC 1268 - definite mag 17.0 galaxy PGC 2183808 - wonderful.

Makes me want to rush out and get a Hyperstar for the C11, until I look at the price............
