Monitor for image processing

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone 😀

I was thinking of buying a gaming laptop as it has all those high end specs needed for astrophotography software .but usually the display on gaming laptops are bad and and low in brightness also. So I'm planning to also buy a separate monitor with good color and brightness for editing . Any recommendations? (Not very high end 😀)

Thank you

It's possible to spend a lot of money on monitors for image processing, but I am not sure how far you need to go for astro pictures. I processed a lot of holiday pictures on a CRT monitor before realising that it was persistently too dim in the dark greys and blacks. On the other hand the screens of my Dell Vostro and budget LCD monitor seem okay.

If you're likely to want to print some of your images, then I'd say you should also consider some kind of calibration device (something like a Datacolor Spyder, or a Colormunki Display - other calibration devices are available).

This allows you to ensure that what you see on your screen is an accurate representation of the data in your image, and it helps enormously in producing prints that look like what you see on screen.

I have thought about an external monitor for my laptop but still use the built in one and its fine even for Photoshop use although it has been calibrated with a Spyder 5. Thing is even expensive monitors struggle to produce the whole colour gamut but its not necessary provided certain points are fixed, its a bit like sound studios mixing tracks using tiny bookshelf speakers that have a defined response.
