Comet C/2017 T2 PANSTARRS

Recommended Posts

T2 PANSTARRS is quite small at the moment and not easy to see visually at magnitude 10.4, although it already has a fairly long tail.

It will reach perihelion in May next year, so should be a brighter target during April.

This is a rough stack of 4 x 300s subs taken on 2nd December with my 11" SCT and unmodified Eos 550D.

Star trailing in the image is caused by movement of the comet.

Caught it nicely, I've been imaging it on and off may have another go in a while if the clouds hold off.

Thanks Dave! This is my first attempt at stacking a comet with Deepskystacker. It certainly makes a mess of the stars!

Bob..

Thanks Bob, your pic looks good too!

I don't think it's moved much over the week.

I'm surprised by that.  When I looked at it a few weeks back it had obviously changed position even over the course of a few minutes.

Sorry, I meant it is still in the vicinity of Capella. In fact looking at Stellarium, it only just gets as far as Cassiopeia by March next year.

On 12th Jan, Comet 289P Blanpain will also pass through Cassiopeia. Stellarium reports it at less than magnitude 5.  Could be one to watch out for!

Tony.
