Help with guide cam choices

Recommended Posts

Ok so the next step in my imaging rig is to get a guiding rig set up.

The choice of guide camera is in some ways more confusing than the imaging one. I understand why prices differ so much for imaging cams but what advantages, if any, are there to the more expensive guide cams or are the less expensive ones equally as effective?

I've used ASI 120mm mini and qhy5 and both are perfectly capable. For what they are, they are both already very expensive when you consider you can buy webcams for a few quid. I'm not aware of any benefits if you spend even more.

I have the original qhy5 and older usb2.0 version of the asi120. Whilst the asi seems to give me better results the qhy copes better when slight cloud is about. Plus the asi will not connect using any usb 3 hubs so needs its own usb 2 lead to the computer.
