M42, the Trapezium

Cyclops

Recommended Posts

Got a good look tonight, good clear dark sky, just a hint of low crescent moon, and looking closely at M42 I think I saw what is known as the Trapezium. Or rather most of it. Near the centre is a bright 'star' but after looking for a while I saw 3 stars in what looked like a trinary system that resembled mickey mouse! 1 brightish star with 2 smaller 'ears'.

I tried with the 4mm EP for 100x but its not a quality EP and its really pushing the scopes limit-better at 44x.

Brilliant to see-I always love seeing Orion.

Well done on the Trapezium - don`t knock a small scopes limits - I`ve found five new DSOs in the last two weeks in my 400mm ST80 - including M68 Globular Cluster in Hydra half an hour ago
