The Magic of Focus

Just for fun.

This short time lapse of resized jpeg images shows just how important focus is to the extent of what you can then capture with your exposures. Bahnitov mask was not used as no stars were bright enough to show in live view.

Each image was just 4 seconds in a light polluted location looking above the murk except the last image. Baader Neodymium filter used. Canon 1100d 40mm pancake lens.

7 x 4 seconds ISO 1600

2 x 4 seconds ISO 3200

1 x 60 seconds ISO 800

The final image was then tracked using a manual barn door mount.

Its odd that you cant see the stars in the liveview screen I get something between pic 7 and 8 and the very faint stuff is what I use to focus on.. I do agree that focus is critical in being able to detect the very faint stars.
