Tips for EQ mount around the zenith

I really struggle to get my scope onto targets around the zenith. Failed to get onto Cassiopeia last night. I have an EQ2 mount.  I always seem to be pushing up against the slow motion controls. Is this just life with an EQ mount or am I missing a trick?

Thats a limitation of German equatorial mounts.

At least I'm not the only one- and I have an AZ. I hate pointing up so far. It just sort of freaks me out. This is probably the wrong hobby for someone with a vertical-telescope phobia.
