I have little AP knowledge...you could try opening the image in gimp again and duplicate the image then set the top layer to "multiply" whilst keeping the lower layer "normal" then adjust the "normal" layers brightness/contrast levels..you could also try screen-overlay-dodge rather than "multiply". HTH
