How do these usb eyepiece / camera perform?

Recommended Posts

Waiting for Fed Ex to deliver my first adult scope and browsing the web I stumbled into this:

http://www.telescope.com/mobile/catalog/product.cmd?productId=102083&gclid=CLvQksWA5csCFVc1aQod1u0KvA

Is it essentially a webcam which hooks up to 1.25" eyepieces?  Seems like a brilliant idea.  Do they perform in real life?

Thanks in advance.

That's a pretty ratty looking link you supplied. But here's the same item on the Orion-USA website (I say Orion-USA as there is an Orion in the UK, but quite different).

These work alright for bright objects like the Moon and planets of our solar-system out to Saturn. Not very high-resolution, but one can have fun with these by hooking them up to your TV or other monitor. But I warn you: It's a slippery-slope! Soon you'll be pricing high-tech astro-video cams! Then selling your family into slavery.....

Enjoy!

It's quite old and basic - so it depends on what you would expect to get from it.

IMO, a £5 ps3 eye can is much better. Not only far cheaper, but more more versatile and will give a better image

Same resolution but much higher FPS which is important. They're a bit fiddly to modify as you need to complete dissemble, swap the mount as lens is glued and then either mod the case or put in a project box. An Xbox camera is also pretty good and a lot easier to mod, a 2 minute jobbie.

The camera doesn't connect to a 1.25" eyepiece, it replaces the eyepiece. This particular camera is quite old now can easily be beaten by a modern webcam.
