Mr. Spock - The Asteroid

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

In memory of the great Leonard Nimoy, here's a capture of Asteroid 2309 Mr. Spock. Yes, there really IS an asteroid named Mr. Spock. It's rather faint at mag 16.5, and in Taurus right now. Discovered in 1971, it has a diameter of around 21km and has an orbital period of 5.23 years.

Just a single 240 second exposure, SXVF-H9 cam, 250mm f/4.7 Newtonian. No darks or flats.

And here's an animation of two cropped frames taken an hour apart, showing its movement in that time.
