Eye piece identification

Recommended Posts

I just bought an ED80 and it came in a carry case and some other things with it including a 2" 28mm multi coated eye piece. (http://www.astroshop.eu/skywatcher-apex-2-eyepiece-28mm-2-/p,5050#tab_bar_3_select) this very eye piece.

I'm just wondering, as I was suprised to see how big it was, if theres any major differences between the eyepiece I just mentioned and a possibly more common one like this for example http://www.ozscopes.com.au/skywatcher-6mm-1-25-super-wide-angle-eyepiece.html. Disregarding the size.

The 2 inch eyepiece is a 28mm Kellner with an apparent field of view of 52°.

52° afov eyepieces up to 32mm focal length fit in a 1.25" barrel, so it is strange to see this one made as a 2" eyepiece.  I think they put it in a 2" housing it because they assume that 2 inch "sounds better" than 1.25 inch. There's no optical benefit for over sizing the barrel though.

The eyepiece you have is a Sky Watcher LET28 ep and a very good low power one, it's AFoV is around 56° and works very well, I have compared it with the Meade 5000 series 68° and to be honest could hardly tell the difference between the two views.

The SW 6mm ep you refer to, I have heard good reports about this, though I have not tried it.  It has a generous 66° AFoV, and at aound 100x magnification in your scope should work quite well.
