Dobs and a tin snail

Recommended Posts

Now then all you Dobites, can I have the benefit of your wisdom? I have a reasonable amount of experience with a GoTo EQ mount and an SCT. I also have a grubby copy of Turn left at Orion, and a dusty memory of star hopping. What I don't have is a pick up and go set up capable of satisfying at least two situations. Firstly a quick option for setting up in the garden after an evening's bike riding with my mates who, after a couple of pints of Theakstons, develop a fascination for all things celestial and secondly a set up that will fit in a caravan (tin snail) under bed cupboard to accommodate our various trips to sites in the UK and France. So there are various Dobs staring at me saying "pick me".

Am I barking up the right tree? What I don't want is something that requires fettling out of the box, scaffolding or has a naff focusser. I am resolved to something called collimation, but not on a frequent basis.

Budget? We'll let's say £400 to £600 to include 'necessary' accessories. I'm from North Yorks so you can be blunt.

They're easy to set up and you can lift it on and off the dob mount easily which would be good for transporting. Don't know if it would fit under the bed cupboard. They hold collimation very well. Dearer than other dobs though but there's a second hand one on astro buy although I don't think it has the mount with it.

Good point about the storage. The OTA is easy to accommodate under the bed but I'm not familiar with the physical size of the mount. I've got about 14" of height to play with, the other cupboard dimensions being larger

I've just measured my 10" OO dob mount. It's 13" x 12.5" x25". I don't know the size of a 6 inch dob mount but based on this I would have thought it would easily fit within the 14" on its side.

Yes, that would fit no problem. TVM.
