Could this be a meteor?

It's a meteorite if it's found it's way to the ground, a meteor when we see it burn up in the sky

To determine if it's of meteoric origin a specialist lab (eg: NHM in London) would need to test it.

99.9% of the time such finds are not of meteoric origin I believe.

Did you test this rock with a strong magnet? Even a regular fridge magnet will work. If it attracts the magnet then look into it further, if it doesn't attract a magnet then it's almost definitely not a meteorite.

Also, does it weigh quite heavy for it's size? Because meteorites contain iron they are quite dense.

Looks very much like an iron type nodule or similar.

I have seem them looking nice and smooth.... usually from being tumbled in a river or the sea at some point.

Makes them look like they have been toasted in the atmosphere!

But you would need an expert to say.

Would be worth emailing a photo to the Natural History Museum... they have a big meteorite display.
