Can increase dynamic range by combining lunar images?

Recommended Posts

Just a thought ...

Suppose I were to take two AVIs of the same area of the Moon, one exposed for the highlights and the second for the shadows, and subsquently processed each, one for highlights, one for shadows.

Is there anyway I can then extract the shadow detail information from one and the highlights details from the other and somehow combine them to create a single image with a greatly enhanced dynamic range?

As an avi or as jpeg/bmp?

I would have thought you could use virtualdub with the highlight avi as the background, then overlay the shadow avi and adjust the opacity as appropriate to allow enough highlight to show whilst preserving detail.

At least, that's how I do it.

'Puters can do anything, there's usually a way.
