I hope i'm not hijacking this thread, but in response to chub.

Here is an image taken using a Celestron 4.5" firstscope with Baader solar film and a Philips SPC 900 webcam.

One of my first Solar images :D

It is false coloured to enhance the structures on the surface.

Wow! I saw this same prominence from Arizona and even got some pics of it. I included several progressive frames of it in one of my solar talks. At the time, I calculated it to be ~241,000 km from the surface to the center of the loop. Or, well over half the distance from Earth to the Moon. Stretched out to a straight line, I'm fairly sure it would reach the Moon from Earth.

Turning the image blue to bring out more detail is called "false color", and is done quite a lot by the Hubble Space Science Institute. Nicely done, Dave!
