All sky cameras

Recommended Posts

Hi has anyone had any experience with any of the all sky cameras ( starlight xpress or Orion) I know they are quite expensive and there are DIY options too, just interested to see if anyone has bought one and performed as expected/met needs/ exceeded expectation?

May be looking at getting one in future but would like to see what people think of them. Mainly interested capturing meteors and some satellites. Thx j

I am one step closer in that i have the camera, a qhy5, but haven't got around to buying the lens yet.

I should have it running within the next couple of weeks.

Qhy5 was 100 pounds and i could buy an all sky lens built for the qhy5 for 40 pounds or try a lens from

Ebay, i've not decided yet. Also need a litle dome to cover it.

I'm dragging my heels a bit...need to get it sorted for the august meteor showers!

  • 5 weeks later...

I purchased an adaptor from lunatico here in spain for 31.8€ and then purchased a "board lens" 2.4 mm (i think) off of ebay.

Very pleased with the results, I now just need a dome to cover it with. I´ve attached a picture of my front room and ugly mug so you can see the kind of field of view I am getting. Looking forward to the perseids!

Hi are you sure you need a doom?

I have got a plastic junction box and find that if I drill a 1/2" hole in the side and cover it with glass I can still get a wide view.

Brilliant! From now on I shall refer to observatories as either roll-off roof or dooms :)

well i guess thats not "so" bad, is there a limit to the video cable?

i was considering getting a CCTV unit with a hard drive in side for imaging it. would that work?

It might well do.

The downside of current cheap CCTV recording systems is the compression they apply to the video signals. Ideally you want to capture and store the raw images from the camera especially with the fisheye systems as the very fine detail of a meteor etc can easily be lost by the compression process.

Hi,

I bought one of those cameras and domes from the US, it's okay, but not brilliant and I had to pay about £25 import duty and Vat, so it made it very expensive. There was rather too many hot pixels on mine so I replaced the camera with a better one (and lower cost) from http://www.rfconcepts.co.uk/board_camera_bw_low_light.htm.

I bought a video capture board from eBay and use AstroVideo to take and stack multiple images, apply dark frame subtraction, stretch the histogram and then upload to my website, http://www.drrobin.co.uk/nightskycamera2.htm

I have never seen any meteors, but may be that is because I only upload every 10 minutes. I have an old DMK21 and a DFK31 gathering dust I might try those in the housing.
