Sun Dog - evening rainbow?

Hi all

Don't know what this is called but it is truly beautiful. Sitting out with a glass of wine, chewing the cud with my wife, and saw this, astounding. An iPhone pic doesn't do it justice. Nature, huh? Good to be alive!

its a very nice image of a sun halo, very nice capture. They are produced by the ice crystals in cirrostatus clouds high (5–10 km, or 3–6 miles) in the upper troposphere The particular shape and orientation of the crystals is responsible for the type of halo observed. Light is reflected and refracted by the ice crystals and may split up into colors because of dispersion. The crystals behave like prisms and mirrors, refracting and reflecting sunlight between their faces, sending shafts of light in particular directions.

Seem to have seen a lot of Sun Dogs and Halos recently(forgot Halo was the correct term, thanks) truly wondrous. Nice to get what appears to be a bit if a summer!

When i see things like that, its what makes me sit and think through all the matters running through my head and realise that they matter so little.

Great Halo. Check out the Atmospheric Optics site http://www.atoptics.co.uk/halo/common.htm which gives lots of great

examples of the numerous halos and arcs that are possible.

It's always worth a careful check around the sky especially when there's a good 22º halo on show.
