Recommended Posts

Hi all

Is anyone familiar with the Phillips SPC610 Webcam?

They are priced at £12.95 on Amazon.

More importantly...are they any good for astro imaging?

Here's the link.....

Hi,

You need to find a philips SPC 900 NC for your purposes. Most other webcams are based on C MOS senors that are not designed for astro photography and therefore they are poor in the sensitivity department. Many dedicated planetary cameras now have sensitive C MOS sensors that are purpose made for the job and are sensitive but they come at a price. For messing about an X Box webcam is cheap and easy to modify and will get you going untill you find a suitable replacement. I also noticed that you have an F8 scope, whatever camera you finally choose must have a very sensitive sensor, these are CCD and almost all are made by Sony. The Philips SPC900 had the ICX 098 BQ sensor that turned out to be a decent performer for webcam imaging, totally by accident and not by design as the reviews of the Philips webcam at the time were actually quite poor. These webcams are going for £75.00 ~ £80.00 on the used market. For dedicated cameras you need to add between £150.00 ~£200.00 to the above figure but at least they do the job.

Regards,

A.G
