Russian Meteor identified

Looks like a team from Columbia have identified where the Russian meteor originated.

Very interesting. An estimated diameter of 17m suggests that this could have done even more damage had it entered the atmosphere under a steeper angle.

The important information will be what type of meteorite it is, eg: iron, stony-iron, stone etc. When they have done that analysis they will be able to find out what sort of parent body it originated from, where within the structure of that body it was formed, how long it has been in space etc.

I read somewhere that it is thought to be an ordinary chondrite, with a low iron content. Here is one article reporting on the composition.
