Sorry if this is a stupid question and may have been asked before but what is the difference between the two ?

Asteroids go round and round and miss us hopefully, meteorites crash and burn.

You can't get rid of meteorites but ointment will remove asteroids

my understanding is an asteroid becomes a meteor when it enters our atmosphere. It becomes a meteorite when it hits the ground.
