My First Spectrum

Recommended Posts

So this was a 2 second shot at ISO 800 using my Cannon 450d mounted on my Skywatcher 250 using a SA100

2 seconds is probably to long and the focus was a little off (its a learning process)

Processed in RSpec

All I have done is a 2 point calibration, I can see absorption lines which is good.

Now I think I need to do Adjustment for Instrument Response

Feedback appreciated and thanks for looking.

Regards

John B

Hi John - Always good to get the first one under the belt. I think you should be able to get more detail by focusing better. Use the detail in the spectrun to focus on rather than the star image as the focal plane is tilted by the grating.

Welcome to the world of spectroscopy!

We all started the same way...

Your image looks overexposed ( the peak intensity of spectrum is similar to the zero order)

Also, make sure the zero order- spectrum is sitting along the horizontal axis of the chip (rotate the grating relative to the camera) and focus on the spectrum, not the star image.

Practise, practise....

Onwards and upwards.
