Small mod to Skytee 2

Recommended Posts

Inspired by the work of Johninderby (But not having anywhere near the talent!!)

Decided to add an additional saddle to the Skytee 2 mount.

I did not like the top mount as it places the eyepieces of the two scopes at differing heights.

Then what to do with the top mounting...put the telrad there of course.

Looks strange but is much easier to sight through. This is aligned to the narrow field of the Mak.

Now just need a bigger widefield refractor to complete the set up.

My pride and joy now carries a slightly larger refractor. (Bresser 152mm F5)

This gives me the Mak for planets and lunar, and larger aperture refractor for widefield and some dso.

The Skytee 2 copes well with the load and continues to impress.

I cannot help saying over again how impressed i am with the mount.

Hi Guys. I am a Skytee owner. Could you give a explanation of what steps were required to add the extra saddle. Does it involve drilling, tapping etc ??

Really hesitant to go near my mount wielding a Black and Decker. May be beyond my comfort zone.

Regards John

Hi

It's not a hard job but you do have to unscrew the end cap (loosen the three grub screws around the edge first) and drill and tap two holes. Just put masking tape on the end cap and hold the saddle in position and mark the two holes. It's important to do this before the end cap is unscrewed so that the saddle will line up afterwards. There is a little leeway for adjustment afterwards but you want it somewhere near right in the first place. A drill press is recommended for the drilling so that the holes are straight.

If you could find a friend with a drill press and the thread tap or maybe a small machine shop it would be a simple job once you'd marked the hole positions.

Star test confirmed that the saddles were not parallel so a 0.5mm shim sorted that out

Stainless steel replacement thumbscrew replaces the naff threaded original aluminium one, much stronger
