OIII Filter and small fracs

@ Rob (crazyjedi): I use my 4" F/6.5 refractor with a 31mm Nagler and that's enough to get both the E & W portions of the Veil in the same, 3.8 degree, true FoV.

@ Hex: I'd get a 2" if you can, unless you are sure you will never use 2" eyepieces that is.

only going on my exsperience i tried the baader oiii on my 6" scope and the view was to dark but the uhc was great, but as said the oiii in other brands seem fine

The most frustrating thing about the NA is that the open clusters in and around it can be picked up but the nebula itself is elusive no matter how hard I strain my good eye at it.

Rob, the real trick with the NA neb is realising how large it is (massive ) it's often the case with most that can't find it is, they can't see it for looking. They are often right on it but because it's so large and faint they don't realise they're looking right through it.

It's a case of get your O-III your widest field eyepiece and then start pushing the scope around looking for a change in the sky background brightness. Once you've found the edge you'll be surprised how easily you can find it again. As I said its huge you can't miss it.

The first time it's easier in bins. I often look at it without a scope at all ( it really is that big)) by holding my O-III filter up to my eye alone. LP quickly washes it out though making it tricky to observe.

For me the O-III filter would be my first choice on this object as you need the ink black sky for maximum contrast to pick it out. The O-III gives a darker sky than the UHC.
