Digital Setting Circles

Just got my Gen Red rotary angle encoder, so am all ready for my Autum Dob modifying project. The original plan was to fit a laminated paper setting circle forst, and then work on the digital version later n the year. However, now Ive got the hardware, I may have to change my plans.

Many thanks to all the contributors to the various threads on using the encoders on Dobs. Having read and re read most of them, my approach to installing the encoder is becoming clearer.

Im going to try my first attempt with a nylon bolt, rather than a steel bolt, as Im assuming this will be easier to modify and fabricate. If the mod works, then I will have to come up with a way of fabricating a modified steel bolt without a lathe / tapping tools.

Hi sounds interesting need to think of doing similiar soon I'm over the bridge in Newport with a lathe and tap's if you need any machining just ask can use yours for a test bed lol Bob

What's the diameter of the input shaft on the GemRed?

James, from memory, the eocoder shaft is 6mm with a flat machined area at the end. Have a look on the Axminster Tools site for a pic, or the Machine DRO site as they do a virtually identical model.
