5X Barlow in a 250PX Dob ?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Im looking for some advice.

Im trading in my 130M for a 250PX Solid Tube this afternoon. So going to be assembling and hopefully trying it out tonight ( Clear Skies Please ).

Would you consider getting a 5X barlow lense for this scope. I already have a 2.5X Barlow which was great and very clear, which I used in my 130M.

Any advice would be appreciated. :hello2:

For visual observing a 5x barlow is going to provide too much magnification for practically any scope. If you use it with a 10mm eyepiece for example you will be getting 600x - even half of that is rarely useful at the best of times. I'd stick with your 2.5x barlow I think.

The power of a Barlow is dictated by the distance between the Barlow lens and the eyepiece. Vary that distance and you will vary the power of the Barlow. So your 2.5x Barlow could potentially be used to give different powers. But I agree that 5x is probably not going to be much use.

I very rarely use a barlow with my 250PX. Normally my highest power is 170x using a 7mm eyepiece. Very occasionally I will use a 2x barlow with a 10mm to give 240x but not more than that.
