What causes this?

Hi all.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what causes this on the image we took yesterday of M42?

It was only a test shot to check focus and framing etc.

M42 was quite low at the time (about 11pm). It was taken with a Canon 550d (unmodded) thru a 150p F5 Newt un-guided, 30 sec exposure, Iso 1600.

At the time I thought it was just trailing but on further examination I dont think it is.

Anyone got any thoughts?

It was taken outside and the scope had cooled. We had already taken some images of the rosette nebula and the stars were pin sharp.

I suspect that the camera or focusser has shifted significantly so you are well out of focus. There also seems to be some movement going on so I would suspect the camera has slipped from its attachment to the scope?

Did somebody manage to tread on a slab the tripod sits on, looks like a bit of movement occurred...??

That makes sense. I'd just changed the orientation of the camera. I'll be checking the focuser and camera attachment a little more closely in future.
