I wonder if this is caused by the slight movement of your eye effectively creating averted vision? I routinely use averted vision even naked eye to spot faint objects and I suppose this is the same as unfocusing as you are not actually looking directly at the object you are wanting to see.

I can do this, I find if I look slightly off centre and un focus my eyes I can see so much more, I may be wrong but I think it has something to do with activating a higher brain function when you see something through your periferal (spelt wrong I know) vision. It's a handy trick!
