The convention is, I believe, tip positive. Some astronomical kit will be destroyed by a polarity reversal. I know two people who cooked their multi thousand pound Tak mounts that way. Have a care!

centre/tip positive is fairly common but if in doubt look at the label (if it's new to you then definitely check) on the device you are powering. You're looking for one of the 2 symbols on this page:

Polarity symbols - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Most likely the top one of the larger 2 images on wikipedia.

It might not even be on the label (if it has one) so you can also look for the symbol near/around the dc socket on the device too.

I have ordered 1 of these, Cigar Lighter Socket to Battery Terminal Adapter, 2 outlets, once its clamped onto the battery the right way round it will just be a case of keeping it charged up. All ready have the cigarette male and 2.5mm Skywatcher power lead.

maplins do the same socket for about £3. i bought one and a ring (brand name) splitter which has 2 outlets with battery level indicator on and that was about 8 quid
