Another thing to take in to account is any hills, trees or light pollution while looking south. Looking close to the horizon you are going through a lot of atmosphere, so any views will be distorted.

I have seen M6 amd M7 (most southern Messier objects at -34 degree's) from Wiltshire okay.

what latitude are you at, cos I couldn't get them earlier in the year? Maybe I need to find a nearby tall hill/mountain by Summertime..
