QHY5v Mono or Colour?

Hello looking for some advice about which qhy5v to buy? i plan to use it prodomantly for guiding (through a finderscope) and also planetary/lunar imaging cam, as i feel i have reached the limits of the spc900, would i achieve better images using mono and getting a filter wheel and doing rgb imaging? or will the colour cam be better. or does it matter whether its mono or colour for guiding? Any help appreciated:confused:

Color CMOS sensors used in QHY5* cams loose some QE versus their mono versions. That's important for guiding and also for planetary imaging (as mono will let you use slightly lower gain - less noise). You can also start with mono-only planetary imaging with mono QHY5* by using infrared-passing filter (limits seeing) like visual red/orange (Baader, GSO/Revelation, Lumicon) filter or deeper IR Astronomik Pro Planet 742

sounds like the mono is more sensitive then, What would be the max realistic frame rates i would get the mono cam?

Are you considering the QHY5 or the QHY5v - different animals...The QHY5 has become the de-facto standard guide camera....

i was looking at getting the QHY5v, as i was looking for a guide cam and was looking for a better planetary imaging cam too so would kill two birds with one stone. Do you recon the QHY5v isnt as suitable for guiding?

Just my opinion, but the QHY5 seems to have less problems to set up as a guider...the smaller 5.2micron pixels I would think would be better for lunary imaging etc.

5v has global shutter (and smaller sensor), while 5 has rolling (and bigger). Both have their + and -, but people can use rolling shutters for planetary/lunary/solar too... unless the object shakes like crazy

Thanks for the info guys, Sounds too me like the QHY5 is the best bet then, I might be better with a smaller pixel size if im going to be using it with a 8x50 finder guider.

noting wrong with QHY5v as a guide camera. I am using it my self (mono version) and can recomend it.

I think it comes down to - you pay your money - you take your chances...they are both good cameras. (and MUCH cheaper than a Lodestar!!)

not finder, but old Hoya lens (135mm focal length f2.8). it has got lower focal lenght than finder, but it should not make big difference
