Thanks for all the sugestions, I have read them and now have a plan, i already have a cricket bag which I have checked and is big enough for the scop, I will make a ply wood liner and cut foam to create a nice secure container for my scope.

Hello, Haddock! Try this: a used neoprene scuba tank carrier. I picked up a used generic version at a yard sale, scrubbed it well to make sure there was no salt water residue around that might damage my 8 inch newt, and it works great and is lightweight, with a couple of super sturdy handles. It wont protect your scope when it falls down the mountain, but probably nothing else will either. I think I paid $25 US, and it has lasted me for 7 years.

For my 10" OTA I have always got by with a padded scope bag. Although it`s not rigid it gives the tube enough protection for the usual travel in a car. Because it is a snug fit, it takes up less room than a box would.
