14" dobsonian

Last night at the Aylsham Festival I was able to look through one of these beasties Orion SkyQuest XX14i IntelliScope Truss Dobsonian :: Dobsonian telescopes :: Telescopes :: Altair Astro.

It was AWESOME, does anyone here have one? What are they like to transport I wonder?

Ha! that's nothing lol, you should get down to Kelling star party in the autumn for a look through 24" of pure glass and mirrors.

But yes the OO's are very nice scopes. The mirror boxes are getting heavy at 14" to 16" sizes and upwards. The trusses come off and they transport in 4 bits. Mirror box, rocker, trusses, and focus tube assembly. 12" is about my limit for transportation lol

Where does the base go?

in 2 parts....circular bit...behind front seats...tube holder bit...in the boot...12 big knobbed bolts hold em together....2 mins to un-do... 2 mins to do-up when on site...tube lays on back seat

Interesting. I'm surprised that the upper part of the base fits in the boot. Are the bolts designed to be loosened for transport?

I've looked through an 18" scope and the views are awesome. Murder to transport through apparently
