This is basically what the mintron camera is, although the mintron allows you to stack frames 'on the fly' to obtain longer exposures (upto about 2.56 seconds). The results from using the mintron are quite pleasant, but without the longer exposure option, you will be restricted to brighter objects (like an unmodified webcam)

I have a CCTV image sensor set up ready to try on the scope. It's a 1/3" Sony SuperHAD with a claimed sensitivity of 0.001 lux in greyscale. I've tried it as a CCTV camera and it's certainly as sensitive as the human eye so better that the usual unmodified webcam. I also have a Philips Vesta webcam with a view to long exposure mod.
