  1. I love the way you are derailing your own thread Rodd! So I help you derail it even more: There is also a comet up there now that I have seen people imaging with good results with the moon out - some really nice gif-animations of it here on SGL and Astrobin. I am almost tempted to give it a try since I never tried comet-imaging before.
  2. Gary Imms posted an image of NGC5371 from 15 February on Astrobin, and Gotthard Stuhm commented that he had captured a supernova. I imaged the same galaxy and a few more on 13 March without knowing that there was a supernova there, so when I now had another look at the image, it is still there but a bit more dim than in Gary's image taken a month earlier. So here is my image from 13 March and a crop with the supernova pointed out. Quite fun to have accidentaly captured that supernova before it faded away - maybe it is gone now..... Gary Imms' February image is here: https://www.astrobin.com/qe5s3j/ Gear: Meade 14" LX200R (FL 3550 mm), Sony A7s, EQ8. 186 x 2 min = 6.2 hours.
  3. That is a stunning rendition of the Pillars Rodd! And thanks for the nice comment on my 3550 mm images (even if you misspelled my name 😉)
  4. That is the way to do it! And, when you have your pier you can allways build a shed around it, but it is more or less impossible to do it the other way around. And, as you say, it should be a separate foundation - you should be able to dance around it without seeing any effect on the guiding curve
  5. Many great ideas here! However, I notice that some of them lack a pillar for the mount, so I just would like to add that before you put up a shed with floor, you should seriously consider having a pier inside or at least make a rather deep concrete foundation in the centre to which you could attach a pillar. To do that after the shed is built would be very cumbersome or impossible. A heavy (>300 kg) and deep (about 60 cm) pillar foundation means that you never (almost) have to worry about polar alignment.
  6. Thanks a lot Mark! It just struck me that we call dust is most likely stars with planets.
  7. Reworked the image since there were clearly more dust and details to be teased out of the data, and what else to do when the moon is out in full force......
  8. Yes, but in combination with clouds and moon consipring, I think there are enough of them out there for my Esprit 150 to be busy for a few years, and if it runs out of galaxies, I have 10 times more for my 3.5 m FL SCT.
  9. Thanks a lot Hunter! Here the sun is in full force and the thermometer reached 15 C for the first time this year, but the moon is of course out in full anti-AP force......
  10. PS. To make sure I actually see a tidal stream I down loaded that paper from The Astrophysical Journal (attached here). Here is their image with the tidal stream (not as pretty galaxies as in your image). Paudel_2013_ApJ_767_133.pdf
  11. Lovely galaxies Wim and a very interesting write up about them! A very sunny day here but if I turn down the blinds in my room I think I see a tidal stream and two out of three dwarf galaxies. Good that you knew they were there since these could easily have been eaten up by some noise reduction.
  12. Thanks Alan! I try to find objects that are not among the most imaged and there are enough galaxies out there.
  13. Thanks Rodd! Yes, it is sometimes striking how different our images look at different platforms, and different screens. Glad you like it at SGL! Take care Göran
  14. Here is a bunch of Virgo cluster galaxies. The twin galaxies are in the process of colliding and merging with each other with the highest star-formation activity in the part where they overlap. Collected with the Esprit 150 with ASI071 sitting on the Mesu200. On 30th March I managed to get 15 x 10 min, and 1st April gave me 45 x 5 min (I reduced the exposure time as the 10 min exposures blew out the core a bit of M58). Gain was set at 200 (offset 30, -15°C). This is my last galaxy shot for a while. Now the moon is up and the moon and galaxies do not go well together, as I confirmed with an over-optimistic try last night🥴. Maybe I get a few more chances later in April but after that the sky will be too bright up here.
  15. or what they can do to the encoders of your mount.....
  16. I will not mention all the viral zoonoses you can get from bird droppings, or what they can do to the encoders of your mount.....
  17. That must be absolutely flex proof! Great design. By the way, your EQ8 looks like it needs a spring clean😉
  18. Maybe you misunderstood my comment - I do not think I have a problem with guiding (but maybe with light leaking into one of my OAGs). I think my guiding on both mounts are just as good as seeing allows (so the mounts do their jobs quite well) so that is why changing exposure times makes no difference.
  19. Yes, I think they are both on 3 seconds, but when I have been playing around with it (from 1.5 to 5 s) it does not seem to make much of a difference. And thanks, I will now try to seal off any possibilities of light leakage!
