  1. Looks like I am getting back on the writing for Astronomy Now magazine wagon. Agreed to produce 3 reviews over the coming 12 months.

  2. Just been notified by the host that alpha-lyrae has been subject to at least 10 hack attacks in the last week! Who cares enough about my silly astro site to do that?

I attempted to work out how self-hosting a website work when I was a teenager. Used a mk1 raspberry pi with apache2 server and worked out how to make it public (albeit only via ip address not with a URL)

It only had a few photographs on it and some wacky CSS layout and basically 0 content. It got turned into a botnet component which I only discovered when people in my house started getting captchas when trying to use google haha.

I think the most common and basic attacks are automated, just try sites and addresses at random for common vulnerabilities like default passwords and default configurations of popular software like apache2 hoping to gain easy access to one of the millions of machines hosting amateur or small business machines to do botnet dirtywork.

Suffice to say the internet is a dangerous place!

  3. Some cheeky monkey in China has made 2 attempts to get the password of my website in the last 24 hours. Annoying to say the least…

I had this happen as well.

  4. Just walked my daughter to nursery, she spotted the moon in the sky before I did. Proud again.

  5. My two and half year old daughter pointed out the crescent moon this evening. “It’s the moon. It’s a baby moon.” Proud dad of a future astronomer it seems.

  6. Wow, spent the last few days (had to do it in multiple sessions as went to 50 pages) reading a thread on CN detailing a DPAC test of an expensive frac. Blimey, got a bit heated at times but hopefully it helped push things in the right direction.

  7. My 2 and half year-old daughter this evening asked for her star sleepsuit when getting ready for bed!  I am so proud.  Clearly, a chip off the old block.

  8. Michael Collins followed me on  Instagram last night.  Cannot think of many social media followers I would rather  have.

  10. Agreed to take a new scope and mount for review for Astronomy Now. Will be my 3rd equipment review for the mag. Look forward to putting it through its paces.

Good stuff!! When we will find out which scope and mount, Matthew?

Already know. It is a Maksutov and a Goto GEM. Should be interesting to compare to some of my refractors, once fully cooled of course.

  11. checked the email account attached to my website. Been approached by another Astro mag asking if I will write reviews for them.

  12. A new telescope was delivered a couple of weeks ago, and combination of real life and weather, has prevented a first light! I am starting to dream about using the scope now...

  13. My new APM LZOS 130 f/9 has arrived!  Looks great.  It has arrived one day before the forecast thunderstorms so no blaming me! ?

    1. GavStar

      GavStar

Nice! What mount are you going to use with it Matthew?

      DirkSteele

At the moment, my Tele Optic Ercole.  I might also see what happens with my iOptron Az Pro, but it might be a bit long for that.

  14. Expect to take delivery of my new APM LZOS 130 f/9 scope this week.  Rather excited and not just because it has a very high quality lens (even for LZOS). Wanted this telescope for years. So if this remarkable streak of clear skies suddenly ends, I apologise!

  15. My next equipment review for Astronomy Now is in the June issue which I believe hits newsstands at the end of the week. Means my mother will be buying another issue! :icon_biggrin:...And I am not joking. She will buy it.
