Then I assume you cannot leave the suff and go to bed like I do. I would also get bored looking at a scope for 4 hours 😉

I could without a problem here, very few about in the village and no one bothers me. You have to be careful of fog especially this time of year. I rather like sitting out with the scope a couple of hours or an hour, depends what I am targeting. I can view it from inside the house too which is about 40 meters away. I dare say it wouldn't take much to make it completely automatic with the roof sliding back in poor weather, but I don't try to be up there with your superb skills but always take inspiration from the likes of you Olly and a few others

Thanks a lot Alan! My previous attempt with 12 hours from my Esprit 150 (f/7) was a rather frustrating exercise in stretching and noise reduction. Never pleased with it but I did get something thanks to my dark sky here.

Maybe I mislead you, I did get the bright part and a hint of the fainter stuff but 4 hours is a lot for me, that normally my top end, then I get bored. I have wonderful sky here and it is close to overhead.

    Hey Alan,

    Thank you!

No, I used the Astronomik CLS on this one. The Lumicon is 2" and would probably have to be put in the front of the paracorr, as my eyepieces are mostly 1.25".

I did tackle the Horsehead ;) it's even visible with Alnitak in the same FOV, at dawn.

(I'm not really happy with the sketch yet)

It's great that it is visible at all, difficult object even with this aperture, I managed it twice but that was maybe out of 20 attempts, I think you have to hit the sweet spot on power, I only had a 1,25 inch filter so rather limited my options.

Should consult @alan potts on that one. I think he has Borg and has done some imaging with it at rather fast F/3.6 or something - and I think there is also CA present with that setup.

Mine is F 4.3 Vlaiv, and whilst I have never been totally happy with the scope I have got a bit better. I feel results have improved since I bought the stronger Astonomik's L 3 IR/UV filter, I seem to recall you among other recommended.

Thank you Alan - I think this could be a case of diminishing returns....10 hours was already a decent level of integration, so adding another 8 hours was less impactful. However, going from, say, 2 hours to 10 hours could be more visible.

Totally agree, I noticed the same with the collection of M33 data. We have plenty of clear skies here from May to November and I normally do about 2 hours a night and was checking the results of M33 at 2 hour intervals, once about 4 hours it was really 12 before you could see a difference. Though one has to consider different processing on each effort, it is unlikely to be the same.

  6. I took a shot of the pelican about 2 weeks back and then thought it's time to swap the camera to the Borg 77ED II which at 330mm is a wider field that the 071 can just about handle. I was never very pleased with results from this scope but I feel they have got a bit better since I bought the Astronomik's L3 UV/IR filter. Not sure I still haven't got a colour caste to the images in the red but they look decent enough to me, there is so much red in this area. This is 40 3 minute subs with calibrations frames.

Feel free to offer advice and any ways to improve it.

I downloaded your image and played a bit with it in PixInsight.

Nice Wim, that is more in keeping with how the 800mm scope records the data and a little like how I got it when I balanced things up a bit, I didn't think this came out too bad considering the small amount of data, I thought it was about 90mins but it's a bit less, I guess the fast F4.3 helps the capture, devil to focus though.
