Yes Alan I am indeed looking forward to receiving my AZ100. 🙂
I’ve dealt with Rowan before for some non astro bits and they were very accommodating in making changes to suit me. Good old British engineering. Those Americans on CN will be so jealous. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Is the AZ100 actually on sale now ?
I’ve heard nothing from FLO lately about my order so assume it’s not yet for sale. Wouldn’t be surprised if they are taking orders at the show though.

Why observe with one eye? In my case I just find it more comfortable and easier. But as I have said before some people just don’t get on with binoviewers and I’m one of those that doesn’t. Bins during the day I can manage but at night just don’t like them at all as they give me eyestrain and a headache and find they don’t improve the view one little bit so why bother.
But if binoviewers work for you why not use them.

Perfect.
I may go tomorrow then ....
Looks like it gives the losmandy mount a bit of competition.
Seems a better built and heavier duty mount so not so much as competition for the Losmandy AZ8 but an alternative if you want something that’s a step up from the AZ8 .The AZ8 is a cheaper alternative. 👍🏻

Hi
The weather has been so bad haven’t had much chance to get it out very often but here is the thread I’ve started on it. Very promising and cools down surprisingly quickly. The other night I had it out to observe the moon as was impressed by how good the views were with no cool down time at all. I would say less than an hour is needed to cool down properly. Also dew doesn’t seem to be a problem. Will take very high magnification and found a 4.5mm Baader Morpheus was useable if seeing is good.
So everything has been very positive so far.

I can’t help comparing it with the photography magazines. Yes it’s a vastly bigger market but a number of magazines have been successful in catering for the beginners market. Maybe that’s the way forward for astronomy magazines and perhaps one oriented towards the beginner could succeed. 🤔
I do feel that astronomy magazines could disappear completely if they don’t take a fresh approach.

When does an astro imager stop being an amateur and become a pro? Is that a fair question or not? 🤔
Can’t blame mags from wanting to showcase the best but perhaps they are not including enough of the beginners efforts? 🤔

And there is the problem of unequal light splitting which does vary among brands. Even the best aren’t 50;50 on each side. Some of the poorer ones are only 60:40 though which might explain why some people find certain brands just don’t work well for them. I wonder if how well some peoples eyes compensate for brightness differences side to side affects their perception of overall brightness? 🤔

Any updates on an availability date yet or has the weather scuppered beta testing?

All electrical goods sold in the UK (except for shavers and toothbrushes) are supposed to come with a UK plug fitted.

Alll standard tripod heads are attached with either a 1/4 or 3/8 photo screw. If the tripod has a 1/4 screw you might need a 1/4 to 3/8 adapter to fit the mount.
You need a reasonably strong tripod though.

I live in the most centrally located city in the UK which is also the most central population wise with an equal amount of people living north and south and east and west.........Derby. 😁

Unfortunately you will have to drill new mounting holes however it is an easy job and Baader gives full instructions. There are a lot of different bolt spacings used and Skywatcher seems to use an awkward spacing.

Has been interesting following this thread but just emphises that we don’t know what gravity is really.
One of the best quotes I came across was by a physicist who said “Ultimately we don’t know what anything is“

Ah yes the 2004 Venus transit. perfect clear skies and was able to watch the whole thing. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Only have to wait until 10–11 December 2117 and 8 December 2125 for the next ones. 😂

Looks like a D Pull handle from Screwfix or some other DIY place. Good solid handles though. 👍🏻
Handles should come as standard with all scopes I think.

Should I get binoviewers?
in Getting Started Equipment Help and Advice
Posted · Edited by johninderby
I have to correct you there. I have tried a number of binoviewers on some very fine scopes and despite being “optimised” still prefered the one eyed observing. And it’s not just me. Many very experienced observers have found they don't like binoviewers. It’s just a matter of personal preference that’s all.
They may work for you but not for everyone. Peoples eyesight does differ so you can’t make the sweeping assumption that your opinion is correct for everyone..
