Doubling up Barlows?

Hi All,

Another probably daft question,

Does anyone or can you double up with barlows, eg- can you put a 2x into a 3x which would then give you 6x focal length ?

I did say it was probably a daft question.

I've seen it done and not a daft question and yes thats exactly how it works, I didn't get a view through the eyepiece though so I have no idea how well it works

2x and 3x would be 5x I'm think.

I stacked two 2 x barlows and a 9mm to view Saturn last night. I put the average barlow into the multi-coated one. I achieved further power by pulling the barlow almost out of each other and tightening the setscrews.

However my fast scope isn't a brilliant performer on planets.

a x2 and x3 will give you x6 a lot of magnification if the equipment and conditions will allow it.but its not all about magnification some times you can see more at a lower power than higher.

I just wondered as I have taken a few crude photo's of the orion nebula and it was very small, so was wondering about using barlows to increase the size.

I wouldn't bother, you would need a much longer exposure and your scope doesn't have tracking. lots of short exposures stacked and then photoshopped would give a better image

Im looking into a dual axis motor at the moment for longer exposures.

Never tried it - I reckon on a good clear, bright night you might get something- will definitely try it though
