Solar Viewing ?

Probably a silly question...

Just wondered, with my scope would I need anything other than a solar filter to have a look at the sun?

No just a solar filter and be careful when you are lining up that you don't view the sun through your spotting scope.

I think the ED80 one would, but give FLO a call...

A couple of things...

Always

1) Check the filter before use, hold it up towards the sun and scan across it looking for holes, find any, don't use it.

2) When lining up, if you don't have a suitably filtered and shielded finder, then if you use the shadow aligned on a wall, that works. Then put your hand over the ep before you look through it... (added) if not suitable filtered, the finder scope must be capped.

Don't forget to take off your finder scope. The sun heat can melt the cross hair inside. You might want to get a sun finder to help aligning the sun.

I made one for my 150mm with baader solar film. worked out very cheap, but that also made it a bit scary looking through it.

Like what was said above, I looked through it without the scope first checking everything.

Then use shadows to line up the scope.

It worked well but you don't get to see much with this kind of filter. Just sun spots if there are any.
