Moon filter - what is the best?

Recommended Posts

I tend to prefer unfiltered views of the moon even in my 12" dob. It's just a matter of getting used to the brightness and after a while it reduces in 'shock' value. As I understand it you cannot make the moon brighter with a telescope than you see it with the naked eye?

I have recently bought a Baader Neodymium Filter mainly for Jupiter (on which it works well) but others suggest it's an excellent moon filter and all they use. Not tried it on Luna yet properly though.

These are not too expensive, especially in the 1.25" format - they come up used every now and again too.

Yes the surface brightness is no more but you get 1600x as much light at 40x magnification ... it's like looking at a sunlit landscape. Fine if you don't want to ruin your night vision completely.

Variable polarizing filters tend to scatter light; try a deep red (Wratten #29) which not only makes the brightness tolerable but blocks all the light that ruins your night vision. The deeply coloured image is not to everyone's taste though.
