Meade Series 5000 SWA eyepiece set

Last night, Auntie FLO delivered a set of Meade Series 5000 Super Wide Angle eyepieces to the Norman Lockyer Observatory where we tested them using a 6” refractor (the one used by Norman Lockyer when he discovered Helium) a 10” refractor and a 12” Newtonian.

The views were superb!

This email from John, a member of the NLO Observer Group, arrived today:

Just woke up after spending a bit too long at the

observatory last night. The reason for this was the misguided purchase

of the new eyepieces; I can foresee arguments, disagreements,

marital strife and fisticuffs on who is to use the eyepieces on Friday nights.

Steve (the villain of the piece, for it was him who recommended these

instruments of strife) turned up at the observatory carrying a small

case, inside of which were some innocent looking Meade wideangle

eyepieces. All the usual noises were made, Oh! They look nice, what a

pretty case, aren’t they big, how much are they? All designed to lull us

all into a false sense of security. And me the patsy of the piece made

the dreadful mistake of placing one of them into the Lockyer

telescope, finding the Orion nebulae and folly upon folly tried to

observe the nebulae, but all that happened was a series of expletives

that alerted the other observers to what I was seeing, hence the start

of all the strife.

WOW what a difference an eyepiece can make. I cannot begin to describe

the experience, for that is to take away from a first look through the

eyepieces, just to say you will not want to let anyone else use them

for a while. The views of the Orion nebulae were breathtaking to say

the least.

I then compounded the folly by taking the aforementioned eyepieces and

fitted tem to the Kensington 10 inch refractor (Steve you have a lot to

answer for)
