The Eastern Veil

Recommended Posts

An unexpected clear night presented the opportunity to turn my SM90+ASI183 on the Eastern Veil, an object I have imaged many times with my RedCat and Samyang 135 but this was my first attempt with the SM90.

The session was curtailed by clouds but it was good to take advantage of the clear skies and no Moon for almost four hours and gather 20xHa, 15xOIII and 10xSII all at 300s.

This is an object traditional presented in HOO .....

... although  I have a preference for SHO.

I've also played around at blending the HOO and SHO image ......

.... and also blending the Hubble palette SHO with the HOO.

All four images are interesting inasmuch that the different colours emphasise different aspects of the structure of the complex nebula.

It would be interesting to know what are peoples preferred colour combination.

Thanks for looking.

Nice details!  I prefer the HOO, particularly with this target, as I have a general preference for a more natural colour palette (while realising that SHO can bring out a lot more detail with some targets). Is there much SII to be found here?

Enough to make it worthwhile taking time to capture I thought.

The neglected SII of the Eastern Veil:

Careful comparison shows the SII and Ha are very similar with only very small and subtle differences, however, in a SHO image it does reveal some additional structure changes which I find interesting.

Here's a gif comparison of HOS ....

... and a comparison of just Ha and SII.

HOO... SHO... many blends

Very nice Adrian and lots to look over to compare colour, structure and depth - excellent :)

Great GIF work too! ☺️

Thanks Lee. I thought the gif was quite 'illuminating' really in showing the differences. I have to be honest and say I am far from becoming a HOO convert 🤣

V nice! all of them.

Thank you. I think they all have something to offer in terms of helping you appreciate the structure and complexity of the nebula - and it's fun messing around with the data on a cloudy night!
