Help buying a Skywatcher Evostar 100ed pro2

Recommended Posts

Could somebody advise me on buying a Skywatcher Evostar 100ed pro 2. I'm in the process of buying a second hand unit for a very reasonable price. I'm selling my Celestron C6-S XLT as I want to do more deep sky imaging, will this scope be a better choice than my C6-S XLT OTA. Could some one help me out as soon as possible, as I want to let the chap I'm buying it off that I will be buying his scope.

Thank you.

I would prefer the refractor, it would be awesome on planets and double stars but IMO wouldn't be any better on DSO. Remember you are going from 6" of aperture to 4" and if DSO's is your aim, aperture wins.

I have a Skywatcher 100 ED Pro and can highly recommend its optics. It's fantastic on open clusters but has a high enough focal ratio to be useful on the moon and planets. As to aperture, the central obstruction in an SCT effectively reduces this and you can count on a significant reduction in contrast.

I reckon, if a 6" SCT is in good collimation, it will out perform a 100ED, despite the central obstruction. In fact I recently had a very nice Celestron C5 which, again when in really good collimation, matched my ED102 Vixen and gave slightly better views of deep sky objects. This also assumes that the SCT's have cooled properly.
