Veil Complex - 4 Panel Mosaic

Recommended Posts

I’m done with processing this Supernova remnant for now. I’ve had so many issues to deal with trying to get a clean image, mostly caused by imaging on two of the hottest days of the year. Have learned some valuable lessons about cooling an astro-camera down in stages (but too late to benefit this image). I have had to pretty much give up on getting flats to work on this for now, in order to keep my sanity. 😊

Just shy of 6 hours worth of exposure in this 4 panel mosaic.

Captured using Skywatcher 80ED Pro (gold edition)
ASI294mc pro -10C unity gain
Optolong l-eNhance filter

Nice image Tony  what did you process your image in , I like your stars mine need taming more

I use a bit of a ‘horses for courses’ approach to be honest.

I use Astro Pixel Processor for Registration and Stacking to linear state.

GraXpert to sort background.

I then use Pixinsight to take from linear to non-linear along these lines…

Platesolve and use SPCC to sort star colours before using BlurX.

Then an initial NoiseX around 75% (works with my setup).

Then StarX to separate Starless and stars while linear.

I generally use Bill Blanshan’s linked stretching tool on the Starless and Star images. Default setting on Starless but usually -2.8 & 0.008 on the stars.

Sometimes I will also use GHC to fine stretch the Starless image.

Next, I save the Starless and stars as Tiff files and pull them into Photoshop CC

I finish the Starless in PS CC, to address Brightness/Contrast, fine-tuning curves, sharpness and saturation (using Colour Match)

I then tend to the Star layer, generally using Noel Carboni’s Actions to make stars smaller, address any residual colour gradients before Copying the whole Star image and Pasting it into the Starless image as a new layer using Screen as the blending mode

Then it’s just final adjustments to levels/curves before flattening and saving.

Phew! 😂
