I can't recall seeing them until about 12 years ago. I'm not sure how I didn't notice them before. I've read that the Hunga Tonga volcanic eruption is likely to have increased the number of NLCS. On clear nights this summer I've seen them 3or4 times a week, I thought they were, or used to be rare. 

Increased rocket launches may of had some effect.
