the construction of a 3" refractor with carpet tube......with brilliantly coloured fringes, were spectacular to us at the time.

Nice one John. I must confess, I'm also often tempted to buy the most gi-huge maginifying glass from a car boot sale, strap it to a carpet tube to see what I can see.
