Tal 120

Hello All

Has anyone owned, or owns a Tal 120 as I wonder would this give improved performance over a Tal 1?

As always many thanks in anticipation of a response.

10mm advantage over a Tal1 isn't going to be a significant upgrade as far as performance goes but, as they say, "every little helps".      🙂

It will be a little better than a Tal 1 and probably for not much money, the reports suggest they do have nice optics, so perhaps it’s worth a go ?

The TAL scopes generally attract good comments.
I owned the 110mm variety for a while. It was very well built mechanically, with good optics.
Unlike a lot of newer scopes, they are not under-mounted.

Generally the age and absence of bells, whistles and goto put some people off.
If the 120 has mirrors that look in good condition, it has to be worth a go.

The Tal 120 is a bird jones i think with a correcting optic built into the focuser. These optics are prone to  delaminating so check it well before buying. But i think they were good quality scopes and nice and compact

As always many thanks for your assistance.

I to like the build quality of the Tal telescopes, and have a Tal 1, and a 100r, and was intrigued by the Tal 120 with the correcting optic built in to the focuser resulting in a shorter OTA.

I was hoping that this not only resulted in a shorter OTA, with improvements to the visual side as well, has anyone got a view on this?

As always any assistance/views are much appreciated.

John is the best person to.ask about the TAL 120. He did a review of them about 10 years ago on here. We have one at the club, but I don't think they are as good as the 100RS or R, both of which I have owned.

I think you are thinking of the Tal 125 which is a refractor.

The Tal 120 is a reflector 👍
