Celestron NexStar 8SE / 800CPC

Recommended Posts

I was thinking of changing the OTA on my goto mount from the 1145P to the 8se. The Nexstar 8se appears to use virtually the same mount, so I wouldn't waste the goto function, tripod, etc. I originally looked at the 800cpc as a full upgrade, but I wondered if the 8se would be a cheaper upgrade path. Hence my original question about mech/optical differences. But the OTAs don't look that much cheaper than the full kit.

The 8 inch scope will be much heavier than your smaller scope and will need a solid mount to make it usable. The mount on the SE is heavier duty than smaller goto mounts.

the mount on an 8se sucks for anything other than visual, its right on the weight limit, having a single fork arm gives it a balancing disadvantage and it has a habit of wandering back and forth over the target whilst tracking.

I have a 4 month old CPC 800 GPS I could be easily persuaded into selling. Its mint and would save you a fortune

I'll buy a nice big 16 inch Dob...

That wouldn't be the one with all the electronic problems reported in your other posts would it? ;)
